OUT IN THE COLD This series (1984 – 1994) deals with the odd experience of being an American in the USSR. For a ten year period I made annual trips, taking American photographers to meet their Russian counterparts. Even though I speak Russian and studied Russian history and literature, I feel that an outsider can never really understand that culture. Therefore, these images are hand-colored in the “wrong” colors, and contain references to theatre and facade, as well as to Russia’s bloody history.
